No one really knows when it all started to go downhill. The massive influx of of the human population that is. Around the early 2000's was when people started noticing cities becoming more crowded than usual, small towns holding more people than they could handle, even rural areas in what could be considered middle-of-nowhere becoming jam packed with too many. A world crisis like no other. Human overpopulation.
With the boom of humanity came the immortals rising from the shadows. Vampires, werewolves, demons, any creature one could think to go bump in the night. The world brought on a new acceptance of death and suicide. So much so that establishments created solely for the purpose of purging the population started to pop up. They started calling this places 'Suicide Clubs'. The most abundant of them were run by vampires who would spare no human that walked through their doors.
The world has struggled to fix itself, and the population barely dented within the past twenty five years. But now the humans are more aware of what has been hiding in the darkness all their lives. Some have accepted it, others have turned into hunters. Attempts of balance have been created, though most have failed.
Welcome to San Diego, the Sunshine City. This SoCal city has been spared from the darkness and is mostly populated by witches that coexist with the humans. Crime here is fairly low, as is the population of shadow dwellers like vampires. While downtown and the surrounding areas are still fairly cramped, the populatiopn control relies more on less violent means. Hospitals have their own private sectors now for 'Willing Euthanasia', a more peaceful means of death than some of the suicide clubs in other parts of the US.
This place is known to be a safe haven for the magical types. Though lately a new police chief has been making that rather hard to believe... Rumors of witches going missing, only to return dead, or worse without their abilities have been spreading through the city. Tales of corruption in the force as well as an underground torture ring have sent the peaceful witches into a paraniod panic.
These are the witches. Born with a greater tie to the magic and elements of the world. These poeple are skilled with what non-magic people know as hexes, potions, and spells. However these people are also born with greater inate abilities unique to each person.
These are the voodooists. Normally found in New Orleans or Hataiti, a few families of Voodoo practitioners moved here to San Diego. Most believe their magic is taboo, but they don't seem to care much.
These people are your normal joe-shmoes of San Diego. They don't have inate magic like the witches and voodooists do.
